A Modern Ingenuity
Hey everyone its me, Brandon with another Modern article. Today I am going to discuss my favourite top 10 Modern decks that I believe have the most interestingly exploited mechanics. If you like this list please check out our YouTube Channel here or my personal YouTube channel hereĀ
10. Dredge
Dredge is a very powerful mechanic designed by Wizards who thought that MTG players really did not want cards in their graveyard, like hell Conflagrate isn’t even a good card and hell Hogaak, Arisen Necropolis is just a terrible card.
The deck itself uses Dredge and discard effects to power through their deck and resurrect cards like Bloodghast and Prized Amalgam to power through their opponents.
9. Swans!
If you thought Goose game was annoying, imagine tossing lands at a few swans and out of no where the swans draw cards until they toss them back at you using Seismic Assault. This deck was not a very powerful deck but it definitely surprised lots of people when it came against them
8. Modern Charbelcher
Possibly one of the newest decks on this list. This deck uses the fact that the Zendikar Spell lands are technically not lands therefore you can just activate Goblin Charbelcher and win the game. This deck is extremely creative with wierd Magic loopholes that it deserves a decent spot on this list.
7. Ponza
Possibly the most bizzarely named deck on this list. Ponza uses land destruction with Molten Rain and Pillage and creatures that keep up tempo like Bloodbraid Elf and Inferno Titanto pound the opponent into the ground. Yes some people believe this deck is very unfair but I personally enjoy its unfairness. What do you all think?
6. Death’s Shadow
Formerly known as Suicide Zoo, this deck sacrifices its life to grow Death’s Shadow into unexplainably large bodies for 1 mana creature then controls the battlefield to swing for the win in either a Jund or Grixis Shell.
This deck sometimes uses Green cards like Traverse the Ulvenwald or Blue cards like Stubborn Denial to keep its crazy card alive. Definitely a formidable opponent in any match up
5. Polymorph
Polymorph exploits the card Polymorph and token producers like Dwarven Mine to launch out Eldrazi monstrosities like Emrakul, the Aeons Torn to quickly end games. However it can also utilise Through the Breach to surprisingly go around mass card removal like Surgical Extraction
Whats a crazy polymorph story you’ve seen?
4. Bogles
Imagine, you are a lone wanderer going through a swamp ground and you hear a low splashing sound, this alerts you to danger making you draw your blade. However you are too late, the predator has already found you… as you look over your shoulder there it is. A 25/25 Slippery Bogle adorned with enchantments galore launching itself at you without regard. Your end is neigh
3. Death and Taxes
Nothing is for sure in life except Death and Taxes, or however the phrase goes. This control deck uses ETB effects and Aether Vial to flash out creatures to control your opponents with flicker effects. Some of these include Flicker Wisp and Charming Prince
To end the game the deck usually has such an enormous board from the overwhelming amount of pressure it gets into the red with Restoration Angel or with a suited up Stoneforge Mystic.
2. Ad Nauseam
I usually hate combo decks, however this one has a special place in my heart for being so odd. This deck uses cards like Angels Grace and Phyrexian Unlife to stay alive as they tear themselves apart with Ad Nauseam and then Lightning Storm their lands in hand at their opponent. Its much like the Swans deck except made by a goth person.
1. Mill
Mill is the number one on this list because it has an alternative wincon compared to most decks. You grab your opponent’s mind and then tear it apart using Glimpse the Unthinkable or Merfolk Secretkeeper. Mill uses some of the most interesting cards and I believe out of this Top 10 is the most flavorful Modern deck.
Did you like my list? what do you think? let me know next time.
