Columbus Meta and MoxBrews Modern
Hi, guys! What’s going on? MoxAmethyst here and I’m back today with a spicy new modern deck for you all. First, we’re going to take a look at the meta from this weekend’s StarCityGames Team Modern Open and then I’m going to share with you a non-Urza strategy that I feel confident in playing into the current field.
This weekend showed very little in terms of innovation for the Modern format, and as was to be expected the most represented strategy was UGx Urza. Merriam and his team played the most off the cuff version of the deck, choosing a red splash to facilitate Experimental Frenzy and Galvanic Blast as well as Blood Moon and Anger of the Gods in the sideboard. This version of the deck was obviously built with a very specific meta in mind but didn’t seem to perform as well as the more standard lists. To complement the Urza strategies we saw both Amulet Titan and Sultai Field show up in high numbers. The verdict is still out on which version of Primeval Titan is best right now, but for what it’s worth I personally lean towards the less combo oriented Sultai Field. To round off the big 3 we saw Devoted Devastation show up in reasonable numbers, although the deck didn’t seem to perform as well as everyone expected going into the tournament. Amongst the other decks to show up were Bant Snowblade and Eldrazi Tron, both of which have been picking up steam as ways to combat the 3 pillars of the format.
This week I’ve decided to take a break from Urza strategies. I’ve played the deck almost exclusively since the printing of Urza, Lord High Artificer in Modern Horizons, and I wanted to try something different. For me personally, the playstyle of the Primeval Titan and Devoted Druid decks just don’t do it for me, as I have always tended towards hard control or combo decks with a high level of complexity (think Kci) . That’s not too say I don’t think they are powerful, and if I thought they were the right choice for a tournament I would sleeve them up no problem. This time I fancied having a bit of a brew, and what I’ve ended up with is in my opinion a very good choice if you expect a meta of Titan, Urza, and Druid.

Those of you that play a lot of Legacy will recognise the core of this deck, as it’s quite similar to the Legacy 4c Snow deck that has cemented itself as a solid Tier 1 archetype. Translating this shell over to Modern actually gives us a lot of game against the current field because we have access to Fatal Push as interaction for Devoted Druid and Urza, Lord High Artificer, Abrupt Decay to deal with Oko, Thief of Crowns and Blood Moon out of the board for Titan and Tron. All of this held together with classic Control favourites to give us a powerful deck that can go toe to toe with the best of them. I intend to continue testing with this deck but so far I have been very impressed with the results that me and the team have had so far.
If you’re interested in seeing a Sideboard Guide for this deck or you have any ideas or suggestions feel free to get in touch. You can reach me through here, Facebook, Twitter, or my Instagram Page. For now, this is Mox Amethyst tapping out.
