Wacky Wednesday with Sunbird: WB Tokens
Hello Everyone, I’m back after a bit of a hiatus due to the flu, but I’m pretty close to full health and my throat doesn’t kill me to record, so let’s get into the article!
For today we’ll be focusing on a really cool archetype based on an old standard deck, tokens! Tokens in standard was based around the “combo” between Anointed Procession and Hidden Stockpile. Together, these cards would let you sacrifice a token using Hidden Stockpile‘s second ability, and thanks to Anointed Procession‘s doubling effect you’ll get two tokens on your endstep.
Anointer Priest is another great engine for the deck, allowing you to gain one life every time you create a token. This, combined with the embalm text, makes Anointer Priest one of the most broken cards in deck.
Another key piece of the plan is to utilize our planeswalkers, Gideon, Ally of Zendikar and Sorin, Solemn Visitor to generate a lot of long term value. Overall, tokens is playing for the long game, so having a value engine to win in these long games, and our planeswalkers allow for that.
With these factoids out of the way, let’s get to the decklist!
WB Tokens
Creatures (7) 4 Anointer Priest 3 Brimaz, King of Oreskos Planeswalkers (6) 4 Gideon, Ally of Zendikar 2 Sorin, Solemn Visitor Spells (13) 3 Fatal Push 4 Thoughtseize 4 Raise the Alarm 2 Unbreakable Formation Enchantments (10) 4 Legion’s Landing 3 Hidden Stockpile 3 Anointed Procession | Lands (24) 4 Concealed Courtyard 4 Fabled Passage 4 Godless Shrine 6 Plains 2 Shambling Vent 4 Swamp Sideboard (15) 4 Duress 2 Fragmentize 2 Damping Sphere 2 Oath of Kaya 2 Unbreakable Formation 3 Leyline of the Void |
Obviously the cards I mentioned before aren’t the only ones, and most of them are late game plays, so let’s get into some of the cards we utilize to get to that point!
Thoughtseize and Fatal Push are great one mana plays that let you fight through early pressure. Raise the Alarm is also a very good instant speed way to make tokens, and works even better once we get down one of more Anointed Processions. Legion’s Landing is another great one mana play that also gives us a late game engine, while possibly getting us to four mana on turn three. Four mana is huge, because that lets us get down an Anointed Procession which can win the game with a little help.
For the mid game we have a really strong three drop in Brimaz, King of Oreskos. Powering out tokens while being a 3/4 Vigilance himself is really powerful. Unbreakable Formation is another solid mid-late game card that allows you to both protect from a boardwipe, and provides an avenue for a huge, vigilant attack.
In the sideboard we have a lot of cards for various matchups. The additional copies of Unbreakable Formation and Duress come in for the control matchup, while Oath of Kaya hits the aggro decks of the format. Damping Sphere comes in to shut down Lotus Field deck, and you bring in Fragmentize to kill any small artifacts or enchantments you’re afraid of. If Possibility Storm is a concern in your meta, feel free to switch to Forsake the Worldly or Revoke Existence. Finally, Leyline of the Void provides some graveyard hate to let you fight decks like Soulflayer and Dredgeless Dredge.
I hope you guys enjoyed this more in-depth article approach, compared to the last one where I just ran through the combo. I’d really appreciate it if you left a comment about that!
